About the Hindu Panchang

The Panchang is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac, used throughout South and Southeast Asia. It is based on both the solar and lunar positions — making it a lunisolar calendar system. Each day's Panchang changes as the Moon moves through the sky, so the Tithi and Nakshatra can change mid-day.

This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsha (the most widely used in India for Panchang calculations) and is accurate to approximately ±12 minutes. For critical Muhurta calculations (wedding ceremonies, surgery times, etc.), please consult a local Jyotishi (Vedic astrologer) with your exact birth location.

The Tithi is particularly important: Ekadashi (11th Tithi) is a major fasting day for Vaishnavas; Purnima (Full Moon, 15th Tithi of Shukla Paksha) and Amavasya (New Moon) are significant for ancestral rites.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग, Panchangam) is the Hindu almanac used across India. The word comes from Sanskrit: Pancha (5) + Anga (limbs). The five limbs are Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana. Panchang is essential for determining auspicious times (Muhurat) for weddings, housewarming, business launch, and other important events.

  • Tithi is the lunar day in the Hindu calendar. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month — 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon, Pratipada to Purnima/Full Moon) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning moon, Pratipada to Amavasya/New Moon). Each Tithi spans the time the Moon gains 12° on the Sun.

  • Nakshatra is the lunar mansion — the position of the Moon among 27 star clusters. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the ecliptic. The Moon moves through all 27 Nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days. Key Nakshatras for auspicious events include Rohini, Pushya, and Uttara Phalguni.

  • Yoga in Panchang (not the exercise form) is one of 27 combinations calculated from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes. Each Yoga is 13°20'. Some Yogas like Siddha, Amrita, and Shubha are auspicious; others like Vishkumbha and Vajra are inauspicious.

  • Karana is half of a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas: 7 movable (Chara) and 4 fixed (Sthira). Bhadra/Vishti Karana is considered inauspicious. Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija are generally auspicious movable Karanas.
