About United Kingdom Public Holidays
Bank holidays in the United Kingdom are official public holidays set by law under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971. England and Wales share the same set of eight bank holidays per year, covering major Christian observances such as Good Friday and Easter Monday, as well as secular public holidays including three Monday bank holidays spread across spring and summer. When Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, substitute bank holidays are declared on the following weekday, ensuring workers always receive their full entitlement. In 2027, both Christmas Day (Dec 25) and Boxing Day (Dec 26) fall on the weekend, so substitute days will be declared — confirm the exact substitute dates via gov.uk closer to the time.
Scotland and Northern Ireland follow their own distinct bank holiday calendars. Scotland does not observe Good Friday or Easter Monday as national bank holidays, but instead observes 2 January and St Andrew's Day (30 November). Northern Ireland additionally observes St Patrick's Day (17 March) and the Battle of the Boyne / Orangemen's Day (12 July). Employers across the UK are not legally required to grant bank holidays as paid leave — this depends on the individual's contract of employment — but the vast majority of full-time workers receive paid leave on all bank holidays as a matter of standard employment practice.
