About Nepal Public Holidays

Nepal has one of the world's most diverse holiday calendars, reflecting the country's extraordinary religious and ethnic plurality. The official public holiday list is governed by the Bikram Sambat (BS) lunisolar calendar — Nepal's official national calendar — which runs approximately 56 years and 8.5 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. As a result, holidays such as Dashain, Tihar, Maha Shivaratri, and Holi do not fall on the same Gregorian date each year; their dates are determined by the lunar cycle and officially announced by the Nepal government each year. The country observes national holidays, religious festivals from Hindu, Buddhist, Kirat, and other traditions, as well as civil commemorative days marking key events in Nepal's political history.

Among Nepal's most significant public holidays are Dashain (also called Vijaya Dashami), a 10-day festival celebrating the victory of good over evil and the most important festival on the Hindu calendar in Nepal, and Tihar (also called Deepawali or Diwali), a five-day festival of lights held two to three weeks after Dashain. Other major holidays include Maha Shivaratri, one of the holiest nights of the year for Hindus worldwide and observed with special reverence at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu; Buddha Jayanti, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), who was born in Lumbini, Nepal; and Constitution Day (September 19), marking the promulgation of Nepal's 2015 Constitution. National Day, Republic Day (May 29), and various martyrs' and unity days reflect Nepal's transition from a monarchy to a federal democratic republic in 2008.
