About Mexico Public Holidays

Mexico's mandatory federal public holidays are established by Article 74 of the Federal Labor Law (Ley Federal del Trabajo). There are 7 días de descanso obligatorio — obligatory rest days — that all employers must observe nationwide. On these days, workers who are required to report to work are entitled to double their regular daily wage in addition to their standard pay, effectively tripling the cost to the employer. The holiday calendar uses a "Monday rule" (puente) for Constitution Day and Benito Juárez's Birthday, shifting their observance to the nearest Monday to create a long weekend and reduce mid-week disruptions to the economy.

Beyond the 7 federal mandatory holidays, several days are widely observed across Mexico through regional tradition, state proclamations, or industry-level collective bargaining agreements. Good Friday (Viernes Santo) is the most prominent example: while not a federal mandatory holiday, it is observed by the vast majority of private and public sector employers, and many states declare it an additional rest day. Other dates such as Día de Muertos (November 1–2), Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (December 12), and regional patron saint festivals may also be observed locally. Workers should consult their employer's official calendar or union agreement to confirm which additional days apply to their workplace.
