About Ireland Public Holidays
Ireland has 10 public holidays per year, established under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. These include a mix of fixed-date holidays and floating bank holidays that fall on specific Mondays. Employees are entitled to a paid day off on each public holiday, or an alternative paid day off, an additional day of annual leave, or an additional day's pay — whichever is agreed with the employer. Part-time employees who have worked at least 40 hours in the five weeks preceding the public holiday are also entitled to public holiday benefits on a pro-rata basis.
St. Brigid's Day on 1 February was introduced as Ireland's newest public holiday in 2023, honouring Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland's patron saints. It is observed on 1 February when that date falls on a Friday, or on the first Monday of February otherwise. In 2027, 1 February falls on a Monday, so the public holiday is observed on that date. When Christmas Day (25 December) or St. Stephen's Day (26 December) falls on a weekend, employees are typically entitled to a substitute public holiday on the next working day, in accordance with established employment law practice and guidance from the Workplace Relations Commission.
