About France Public Holidays
France has 11 official public holidays (jours fériés) established by the Labour Code (Code du travail). These holidays fall into two categories: fixed-date holidays that occur on the same calendar date every year, and moveable Christian feasts whose dates shift annually based on the date of Easter. Under French law, public holidays are paid rest days for most employees, and work on a public holiday generally entitles workers to premium pay or a replacement day off, depending on collective agreements and company policy. Unlike some countries, France does not observe a substitute holiday when a public holiday falls on a weekend.
Three of France's 11 public holidays are moveable: Easter Monday (Lundi de Pâques), Ascension Day (Ascension), and Whit Monday (Lundi de Pentecôte). In 2027, Easter Sunday falls on March 28, placing Easter Monday on March 29, Ascension Day on May 6 (39 days after Easter), and Whit Monday on May 17 (50 days after Easter).
